A strange astronomical coincidence, responsible for the beautiful phenomenon of the Total Solar Eclipse, can be observed at exactly the same time when intelligent life emerges and currently lives on this planet. It just so happens that the diameter of the Moon is 3.474 km and that of the Sun is 1.391.400 km, and this means that the Sun is ~400 times larger in diameter than the Moon. Also, even though the orbits of the Moon around the Earth and that of the Earth around the Sun are elliptical, meaning that the distance from our planet to the Sun and that to the Moon varies, there is a certain interval of time of the year when the Earth's distance to the Sun is ~400 times larger than its distance to the Moon. What is strange is that the Moon was much closer to the Earth when it had formed 4.5 billion years ago when an object roughly the size of Mars hit us . Scientists rate this initial distance as between 20.000 km and 30.000 km. Now the Moon is 384.000 km away and it is receding at roughly 3.8 centimeters per year. So, the Sun is 400 times bigger in diameter but 400 times more distant than the Moon at exactly the time when we are living, giving us the possibility to observe the beautiful phenomenon of the Total Solar Eclipse when the Moon completely covers the Sun's disk because they are both similar in APPARENT size. In the past the Moon’s much larger disk would have completely obscured the Sun; in the future a ring of sunlight will be visible during solar eclipses because the Moon will be much farther away from our planet.
